The Optio 43WR has 12 programmed camera settings. Instead of shutting off the flash, I should have set the camera to Cloudy/Scenery Mode and seen what kind of pictures I got. One of 2 things will happen: Either the camera will hold the shutter open longer to allow more light - resulting in jittery photos like you saw, OR the camera will delay taking the picture by a fraction of a second, which will allow the light from the flash to get out farther. I'll have to test it and see.
